General Orthopaedics

What is Orthopaedics?
Orthopaedics is a specialty of medicine that cares for your body’s musculoskeletal system, which comprises your bones, muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Orthopaedic specialists diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate the injuries and diseases of this complex system that allows you to move, work and be physically active.

The practice of orthopaedic medicine covers a wide range of areas, from sprains to sports-related injuries to joint replacements. Orthopaedic conditions affect millions of people of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Joint diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis account for more than half of all chronic conditions in seniors. Traffic accidents are a leading cause of severe orthopaedic injuries, and participation in sports and certain occupations can lead to painful conditions as well.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Your initial visit with one of our orthopaedic specialists will begin with a personal interview and physical exam, followed by diagnostic testing. Tests may include X-ray, MRI, injections, or nerve conduction studies. Your diagnosis and treatment options will be discussed thoroughly with you, with the goal of enabling you to continue your functional lifestyle as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

There have been many recent technological advances in the field of orthopaedic surgery, such as arthroscopy, which allows the orthopaedist to look inside a joint with minimal invasion. However, for most orthopaedic injuries and diseases, there is more than one treatment option, and surgery is not always the best solution. Your orthopaedist may propose alternatives such as medical counseling, medication, injections, exercise or physical therapy.

Occupational Injuries
Working for a living allows us many advantages, but can also impart physical demands, however unnoticed or unintentional, than can result in strains, injuries, and serious medical conditions. Older workers generally experience more workplace injury than younger workers, but anyone can experience an occupational injury that requires treatment. Repetitive motion can often be the cause for orthopaedic problems of the hand, spine, or foot. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Tendonitis are common problems treated by our orthopaedic team.
